The modeling
world has been in the news a lot lately, as everyone from
journalists to politicians to fashion designers debate the
proper weight for runway models. Some countries have banned
underweight models from participating in runway shows. The
measure consistently mentioned in regard to this underweight
model debate is the BMI. What is the BMI and is this a good
measuring tool for us non-models to determine proper body
size ?

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a statistical measurement calculated
from weight and height. It is an indicator of body fat.
While it is not a direct measurement of body fat, it is
a good alternative for those who don’t have underwater weighing
or the like readily available. This formula is a good standard
to see where your body is at and if your weight is healthy
for your height. The BMI can help determine weight problems,
yet according to the Center for Disease Control, it is not
a diagnostic tool. If you have a high BMI, seek out a doctor
to determine the best way to reduce body fat to a healthy
level.
To determine your BMI use the following mathematical formula:
BMI = (Weight in Pounds/(Height in inches) x (Height in
inches)) x 703
example... A 114 pound female who is 5’3” has a BMI of 20.2
(114/(63)(63)) x 703 = 20.2)
Here are general guidelines to determine if your BMI is
healthy.
• Underweight = <18.5
• Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
• Overweight = 25-29.9
• Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater |
