“what are they DOING IN there?”

written by Kim Christine
Lifestyle Family Fitness Group Fitness Director

Ever stood outside of the Group Fitness room and wondered “what are they doing in there?” or “would I enjoy it if I joined in?” The only real way to find out answers to these questions is to get in there and see for yourself. In the meantime, let’s answer some of your questions so that taking that first step is a little less daunting!

Group Fitness is any physical workout in a group setting that is two or more participants. Of course, the more people in class, the more energy you build and the more motivating it becomes. That’s the power of Group Fitness!

At Lifestyle Family Fitness, different group fitness classes are highlighted each quarter and new versions released during Quarterly Launch Week. This quarter, BODYCOMBATTM will be featured from August 4 -10 at all Lifestyle locations. During this week, members and prospective members have the opportunity to come into our clubs and experience all the latest releases of our classes, free of charge for all non-members. In the future, many classes held during this week will be extended to include “Get to Know Us” orientations - short technique clinics to educate and inform participants about the class. This is a great time to try something new!

What makes Group Fitness at Lifestyle Family Fitness unique? At the core of our Group Fitness programs are motivating instructors and world-class programming. Our programming is spearheaded by seven intense classes created by Les Mills International, the world’s leader in innovative and effective group fitness solutions.

These programs are complemented by a host of strong specialty programs that cater to our members’ specific and individual needs. Our freestyle classes include programs such as: Pilates, SilverSneakers®, Zumba, Turbo Kick, Aqua, core strength classes and many more. All of our programs are researched and created by experienced professionals to ensure participant safety and to deliver the results that members are seeking.

The Benefits of Group Fitness There are many benefits to Group Fitness, from building cardio endurance to improving muscle tone and flexibility. Some of them are fairly evident, some are less tangible. Regardless of your fitness goals, Group Fitness has a solution for you.

Power in numbers!
One of the most overlooked benefits is the value of the camaraderie you build in the Group Fitness room. This companionship can be just the thing you need to get yourself into the club on those days when you just don’t have the motivation. Group Fitness instructors and fellow participants not only provide inspiration during class to push you to improved results, they create an expectation and a built-in accountability system to get you to the club when you otherwise might skip your workout. In short, they help you stick to your plan!

The leaders of the pack!
Lifestyle Family Fitness instructors are world-class. They will inspire you to reach levels in your workout that you never imagined possible, levels that you might never reach on the treadmill. All of our instructors attend a rigorous training program to fully prepare them to coach and motivate, and continually receive education to keep them current and skilled in their discipline. Our instructors are the best of the best. They are diligent and passionate about what they do. Their sole purpose is to help you reach your fitness goals, one class at a time! It’s like having your own personal exercise coach!

Did we say results?
Average caloric expenditure for our Les Mills programs is between 600 – 700 calories. Of course, what you get out of any work out depends on what you put into it, but the potential to burn is right there for the taking! And by mixing and matching the classes that you take, you cross train automatically. For participants who commit to a regular and varied class schedule, results will be seen quite quickly in cardio endurance, muscle toning, flexibility, balance, and core strength.

Are we having fun yet?
And there’s no doubt about it, Group Fitness is just plain fun! Does this scenario ring a bell? You are 10 minutes into a treadmill workout and your eyes keep creeping down to the stats panel - your brain continually tabulating exactly how many more painful minutes you have left until you can get off? We’ve all been there – and one time is one time too many! Now transport yourself into the Group Fitness room – with pumping music, a motivating and energetic instructor on stage, fellow participants and friends sweating on the next bench over giving you that extra ‘push’ when needed – is pure entertainment. And simply put, it beats the heck out of that clock-ticking treadmill experience!

So what are you waiting for?
Solid results, motivating instructors, built-in accountability and an entertaining environment – what’s not to like? So kick that piece of cardio equipment to the side and join us in the Group Fitness room for one of our amazing workouts. We’ll be looking for you.
