You Ask... We Answer
Are there any foods that I can consume to protect or improve
my memory? - Laura S., Columbus, OH
It is important to consume a healthy diet.
According to the book “Prescription for
Natural Cures” by James F. Balch, M.D.,
a diet of healthy unprocessed and
organic foods is integral to maintaining
and improving the memory. Balch sites
the fact that non-organic foods often
contain toxins that are detrimental to the
memory. In addition, certain vitamins
such as A, C, and E can help boost your
brain power.
In order to ward off memory loss caused
by aging, ensure your diet is rich in
vegetables. A 25-year Harvard Medical
School study of more than 13,000
women found that those who consumed
a diet rich in vegetables over a long
period of time had less age-related
memory decline. The study found
vegetables such as broccoli, brussels
sprouts and cauliflower were great for
retaining memory.

According to an article on MSNBC.com,
another study found that phytochemicals
(compounds in plant-derived foods),
anthocyanin (a blue or red pigment
found in some fruits and vegetables)
and quercetin (a phytochemical and
powerful antioxidant found in certain
fruits and vegetables) may help reverse
age related memory deficits. Some
fruits and vegetables to eat include
berries, eggplant, grapes, plums, apples
and onions.
So, don’t forget to load up on fruits and
vegetables during your next meal!
