Healthy Alternatives for Your Super Bowl Spectacular

Super Bowl Sunday is just around the corner and it could not come at a worse time! The New Year’s diet has only just begun, but how can you pass up burgers, hot dogs and cocktails? This year, enjoy the things you love but switch up your menu and choose healthy options that are so delicious. You won’t even taste the difference!

Beef burger vs. Turkey burger
Before you fire up the barbecue and grill a greasy burger laden with fat and cholesterol, seek out the alternative. Use lean ground turkey rather than beef. A serving of ground beef can contain 23 grams of fat per serving. Choosing lean ground turkey reduces the fat content to 13 grams per serving. The burger will grill up thick, delicious and guilt free.

Chips vs. veggies with dip
Nothing beats snacking on a salty, crunchy potato chip dipped into a creamy dip. This year, offer a veggie platter as an alternative. Choose celery, carrots, green beans, peppers, cucumbers and more. Serve chilled with a low fat or fat free dip available at any local grocery store. It’s a delicious, low fat, low calorie snack everyone can enjoy. A serving of an average potato chip can contain 130 calories and 10 grams of fat. With veggies, you can snack more and feel less guilt.

Beer and Cocktails vs. Red Wine
A party is a great time to loosen up and have a few drinks with friends. Rather than chugging a carbohydrate-loaded beer, or calorie filled cocktail, choose red wine as your alcoholic beverage of choice. You will save many calories – and studies indicate that drinking a moderate amount of red wine is a heart-healthy idea!
